Gallow Ladies pick up County League Title after dramatic finish
The Norfolk Women's Indoor Bowls County Triples League reached a climax when the final games were played last weekend with Gallow clinching the title.
The race for the top spot had been a close one all through the season with Norfolk Bowling Club, County Arts and Gallow all claiming it at some point; a late charge came from Acle 'A' and, when County Arts went down at North Walsham, it looked as though they would be champions but there was to be a final twist in the tale. Gallow 'A' played Woodlands 'A' in their final match and scored 7 of the 8 points available; Acle 'A' travelled to North Walsham needing 2½ points to secure the title. They only scored 1½ which meant that Gallow 'A' were crowned League Champions.
Gallow's victory is their first since the league started in 1993. Their consistency, especially at home where they have not lost a match, has been the key. Team captain Pam Whitehead commented “This success is due to the amazing support not only from regular A Team players but from the B Team and even beginners who have stepped up and played when we struggled to field a full team. I would like to thank and congratulate everyone who has played a part in winning this trophy, an amazing achievement for a relatively small club”.
The other Divisions were just as keenly contested. In the South, with just 2 weeks to go, there were 6 teams within 7 points of each other so all in with a chance of winning . Eventually, Acle 'B' pulled away from the rest securing the title from, new kids on the block, Lowestoft Railway. Roundwood 'A' had a very good season and won the North Division by 2 points from Dereham.
Now that the leagues have been completed attention turns to the County Play-offs. Club winners will be competing to become County champions; the finals taking place at Wymondham Dell on 27th April.
